The recent 4th Annual joint ITWomen and PMI South Florida Chapter event on "How to Recession-Proof Yourself with Project Management Skills" drew a full crowd at event host Spherion.
A panel of senior project managers spoke about how they have navigated and succeeded in corporate environments, especially in tough financial times.
Moderator was Alicia Blain, Certified Master Coach, retired VP Information Systems for VISA International's Latin American and Caribbean regions, and speaker on managing generations in the workplace.
Highlights
Knowing the business of your company and what your executives really value is essential to having an edge in tough times.
"I was able to propose a project for the core business recently (for eDiets) and I could do that because I knew the business, having already talked to lots of people" -- Katherine Ericsson, PMP, eDiets Inc., Senior Director, Project Management Office. eDiets has undergone downsizing in the past year.
"One of my clients is really pushing their IT department to understand the business and brand themselves as more than IT, because IT can be considered as outsourceable." -- James T. Brown, Ph.D., PMI member, consultant, and author of The Handbook of Program Management: How to Facilitate Project Success with Optimal Program Management
“You have to think about the culture, what the executives value, the maturity of the organization.” -- Robin Lenihan, PMP, Eastern Financial Credit Union, VP, Project Management. Eastern is currently undergoing a merger with Space Coast Credit Union.
In addition, two $250 certificates from PC Professor were raffled at the meeting.

Testimonials from 2008 CIO Fundraiser
Many thanks for the invitation to ITWomen. From a Business perspective, definitely it is the right event to be part of. . . From a human perspective, what your organization does for people is just amazing and it is the greatest experience for people that want a dream come true!
--Juan Vasquez, Global Markets Director, Global Crossing
Great event last night, as always. Congratulations!
-- Diane King, Ph.D. Curriculum Development, MDC
Another great success - [your] poker tournament was lots of fun, great participation and heard many comments about what a great event it is. I know I had several important networking/business related conversations with my customers and new prospects. My table assignment was just perfect and had the opportunity to introduce some of the CIOs to each other.
--Jen Boyer, Computer Aid, Inc. (CAI)
